What's the easiest way to get rid of a trojan changer virus FOR GOOD?

Back up all your pics, music, ect.. and then reformat your C: drive and reload windows or whatever you use. I have a computer savvy friend who does this all the time. He says it's the only way to fully guarantee you'll get rid of the virus..
